Red River, LA (61.5%-31.3%) (margin: 30.2%)
St Martin, LA (60.2%-30.4%) (margin: 29.8%)
Howard, AR (59.18%-31.91%) (margin: 27.27%)
Union, KY (57.3%-30.6%) (margin: 26.7%)
Sevier, AR (57.69%-31.16%) (margin: 26.53%)
Allen, LA (55.7%-29.3%) (margin: 26.4%)
DeSoto, LA (59.1%-33.5%) (margin: 25.6%)
Webster, KY (55.9%-30.7%) (margin: 25.2%)

These are all the counties where Clinton's '96 margin was over 25%. They are all in three Southern states: Louisiana (with five), Arkansas (with four), and Kentucky (with two). All of these counties have gone on to vote Republican in 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020.

Marshall, OK (53.4%-32.7%) (margin: 20.74%)
Koochiching, MN (51.6%-30.9%) (margin: 20.68%)

These round out the counties in which the margin was over 20%. Koochiching, MN and Orleans, VT are the only ones that have gone on to vote Democratic in any subsequent election.

County flips from 1920 on

In this post, we'll look at the counties that switched from each major party to the other in every election from 1920 on (as well as a few earlier elections). In some cases, there is a source that gives the number of counties, in which case I link to the source. In some cases, I deduce the number of counties that one of the nominees flipped, from the number that the other nominee flipped and from the number of counties each party carried in the previous election (the figures for which are here ). These can be slightly (hopefully only slightly) off for a variety of reasons, so in these cases, the figure is preceded by a tilde.
