These are the states in which there was at least one such county in 1988. Daggett County, Utah cast 412 votes in 1988, and Thomas County, Nebraska, 466. Cherokee, NC cast 7,145 votes, and Clay, NC, 3,480. Calvert, MD cast 17,397 votes, and Charles, MD, 32,764. Charles County is across the Potomac River from King George County, VA, which itself borders Caroline County, VA. Charles County has a small border with Calvert County, both of which are in southern Maryland. Indiana was Dan Quayle's home state, and Minnesota, Walter Mondale's. (In Dan Quayle's home county of Huntington, IN, Bush Sr's 74.9% in 1988 remains the all-time high of any presidential nominee going back to at least 1888; George W. Bush got 74.3% in 2004.)
